Yuan is a 60-year-old butch lesbian, former village mayor, mother, and business owner living in Shanghai. Still married to her daughter’s father, whom she continues to care for and presents as her wife’s husband to her family, Yuan is also in a relationship with a woman thirty years her junior. Caught between her own desires and the weight of generational expectations, family obligations, and social conformity, she finds herself constantly negotiating the terms of her freedom in order to be happy. Offering an intimate view into the lives of LGBTQ+ people in contemporary China, The Wolf follows a charismatic and fiercely independent woman who refuses to abandon either her responsibilities or herself. Complex, contradictory, and unapologetically human, Yuan’s story challenges easy and simple ideas on liberation and what it means to live freely on your own terms.
