South Of Tehran
From Viennale
Jafar Panahi smokes a cigarette in New York City, while we hear his voice telling us about his early relationship with cinema in South Tehran. He takes a cab and looks at the movie theatres along the street, conjuring up sounds from his film AYNEH (1997) and images from TAXI (2015). A lifelong cinephile, Kleber Mendonça Filho is a firm believer in the sacredness of cinema. Here, he finds a kindred spirit. Together, they invent a place where Tehran and New York can coexist in a shot/reverse shot. Film can be a city without borders. (Victor Guimarães)
